Sylvia borin
Sylvia borin
This species has a Western Palearctic distribution (BirdLife International, 2024). In Europe it is scarce in the Mediterranean region and the northern Caucasus, and abundant in the rest of the continent (Keller et al., 2020). As a bird with Eurosiberian preferences, it appears in the Iberian Peninsula almost exclusively in the northern half, mainly in the Cantabrian Mountains, the Duero basin, the Iberian System and the Pyrenees (Aparicio in SEO/BirdLife, 2022).
In the Community of Madrid it is distributed at mid elevations (between 1,100 and 1,500 meters) in the mountains. At lower altitudes it appears sporadically in riparian forests. Its characteristic habitat in the province is oak forests, and to a lesser extent, riparian woodlands and humid pine forests (Díaz et al., 1994).
In the national park it is found in forested areas, and its highest abundances occur in the Lozoya Valley and the Purgatorio area, where extensive oak forests and mixed deciduous woodlands with well-developed shrub layers are present.

During the breeding season, this species inhabits Pyrenean oak forests and tree-covered farmlands in the supramediterranean zone, although it also appears in more thermic bioclimatic zones, penetrating through riparian woodlands and shaded slopes. It prefers areas with lower sunlight exposure and an abundance of deciduous forests in humid zones or riparian habitats (Tellería et al., 1999; Aparicio, 2016).
In the national park its highest densities are found in Pyrenean oak forests and mixed woodlands with abundant shrub undergrowth, being absent from high-mountain pine forests and the highest areas.

At a global scale it is considered to be in the category of Least Concern (LC; 2016). In Europe it would also be classified in the same category (LC; 2020). In Spain it is considered a Least Concern species in the 2021 Red List.
The Catalogue of Threatened Species of the Community of Madrid (1992) does not include this species in any threat category.
